Secularist leader on Orange Order and Benedictines’ Buckfast: ‘a delicious irony’

Letter to the Sunday Herald, 9 July 2017:

Peter Swindon’s report (Bloodshed, drunkenness and triumphalism: the Orange Order on the streets of Scotland, Eyewitness, July 2) on the Orange Order parades that took place over last weekend contains a statement to the effect that some march supporters were drinking Buckfast straight from the bottle as the parades marched past.

Buckfast is made by Catholic Benedictine monks in Devon as a registered charity whose charitable purpose is the advancement of the Catholic faith.

While I find the monks’ brew something of an acquired taste, am I alone in seeing a delicious irony in this?

Alistair McBay
National Secular Society

Buckfast Tonic Wine is made by the Roman Catholic Community of Benedictine monks at Buckfast Abbey in Devon, and distributed by J. Chandler & Co (Buckfast) Ltd of Andover. Mention of the wine was removed from the Abbey’s website at some point after July 2011.
